What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? How Pages Get Cited by AI Answers (2026)
Updated
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making a page easy for AI answer engines to fetch, understand and cite as a source. An answer engine replies with a written answer and a handful of supporting links instead of a ranked list: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot. AEO asks one question of every important page: when someone asks the question this page answers, is it one of the links under the answer?
The term overlaps almost completely with generative engine optimization. AEO is the label the search industry settled on; GEO is the label from the research paper that named the field. Both point at the same shift: the unit that gets picked is a passage that answers a question, and the reward is a citation rather than a position.
What Google says it takes
The most useful fact in AEO is the least exciting one. Google's guide to AI features says that to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and that "there are no additional technical requirements." It also says specific optimization isn't required. The list of what helps is familiar: allow crawling in robots.txt and at your CDN, make content findable through internal links, keep important content in text, and make structured data match the visible page. AEO Footnotes has a sourced walkthrough of what Google says it takes to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, including the preview controls below.
Two details explain why AI answers cite pages a classic search would not. Both features may use query fan-out, issuing several related searches across subtopics and combining the results, so the set of supporting links is wider than the top ten. And AI Overviews only appear when Google's systems decide they add something, so many queries never show one.
The levers that actually exist
Once the basics are in place, AEO comes down to a few deliberate decisions:
- Which AI crawlers you allow. Operators run separate bots for training, for search, and for fetches a user asked for. Blocking OpenAI's GPTBot keeps content out of training; blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps a site out of ChatGPT search answers. The AI crawlers by purpose reference lists each token and what its robots.txt line controls.
- How much text answer engines may quote. In Google,
nosnippetstops a page being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode,max-snippetlimits how much can be used, anddata-nosnippetexcludes parts of a page. More restriction means less presence in AI answers. - Whether each section answers on its own. Answer engines quote passages. A section whose first sentence answers the question with the specific fact is easier to lift than one that warms up for two paragraphs.
- Whether to publish an llms.txt file. Useful for documentation sites that coding agents read, optional elsewhere, and not shown by any source to change citations.
How to measure it
Measurement is where AEO is weakest. Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode appearances inside the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report, so the traffic is real but not separated. Bing goes further: its AI Performance report shows total citations, average cited pages, grounding queries and page-level citation counts across Copilot and Bing AI summaries, with newer Citation Share and Topics views in preview. Bing itself describes those numbers as directional signals, not a precise ledger.
Clicks are a separate question from citations. Pew's browsing panel found users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared and 15% when it did not, while Semrush found zero-click rates on the same keywords fell slightly after AI Overviews arrived. The studies measure different things, so read each number with its method.
Why being cited is not the same as being credited
AI answers get attribution wrong often. The Tow Center asked eight AI search tools to name the headline, publisher, date and URL for excerpts from news articles; collectively they answered more than 60% of queries incorrectly, sent users to syndicated copies, and cited broken or fabricated URLs. A Stanford audit of four generative search engines found only 51.5% of generated sentences were fully supported by their citations. The two audits are summarised in how often AI search engines cite the wrong source. The practical upshot for AEO: check where citations point, not only whether your name appears.
A prompt for an AEO spot check
Run this in an AI search tool once per important page, with the question the page is meant to answer:
Answer this question as you normally would, with sources: [question].
Then, separately, list every URL you cited. For each one, quote the exact sentence from your answer that it supports.
Finally, tell me whether [your page URL] would be a good source for this answer. If not, name the specific fact or section it is missing.
Record the cited URLs over a few weeks rather than trusting a single run; answers vary between runs and between AI Overviews and AI Mode. Once you have the citations, the ChatGPT prompts for SEO pack has an answer-first rewrite prompt for the sections that should have been quoted and were not.

Questions
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. An answer engine is a search product that replies with a written answer and a few cited sources instead of a list of ten links: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot. AEO is the work of being one of those cited sources.
Is AEO different from SEO?
Less than the marketing suggests. Google's own documentation says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that there are no additional technical requirements. Most of AEO is ordinary SEO plus decisions about AI crawlers, preview controls and how you measure citations.
Do I need special markup or a special file for AEO?
Google says no. Structured data should match the visible text on the page, and an llms.txt file is optional for most marketing sites. No source shows that either one raises citations on its own.
How do I measure AEO?
Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report, so it is not broken out on its own. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report with total citations, cited pages and grounding queries for Copilot and Bing AI summaries. For ChatGPT and Perplexity, you run the questions yourself and record which URLs get cited.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They describe the same goal from two angles. AEO comes from the search industry and talks about answer engines; GEO, generative engine optimization, comes from a 2023 research paper and talks about generative engines. Most practitioners use the terms interchangeably.
